Until 1979, Rick and Kristie Knoll had been "alternative suburbanites" in Santa Ana, where
Black Mission Figs were originally brought to California in the late 18th century by Spanish missionaries, hence the name. The skin is aubergine to black in color and the lush pink flesh offers a profound earthy sweetness. Figs have been cultivated for thousands of years, and likely originated in the fertile soils of ancient Arabia. Black Mission Figs are superb with blue cheese, walnuts and honey, grilled and stuffed with goat cheese, or as a sweet counterpoint to poultry and game.
