Nutrition Cluster Overview

Introduction

A number of gaps and opportunities or focus areas have been identified by the Nutrition Cluster partners and the strategic opportunity lies in ensuring the right information gets to the right people in a timely and accessible manner.  The four focus areas for the Nutrition Cluster are strategic and are not meant to be exhaustive and include a) coordination, b) capacity building, c)emergency preparedness, assessment, monitoring, surveillance, and c)supply.

Global Cluster Meetings

The Global Nutrition Cluster supports face-to-face meetings of members as well as separate face-to-face working group meeting on an as needed basis.  These meetings are a time during which members can be updated on nutrition cluster activities and provides a convenient forum for activity related decision making.  Budget and workplanning issues are also frequently tackled.  A handful of representatives from country clusters participate in each meeting in order to improve support to the field clusters and to bring the country cluster experiences and lessons learned to the global cluster members.

Initial Rapid Assessment Tool (IRA)
The Assessment Working Group of the IASC Global Nutrition Cluster, in collaboration with the Health and WASH clusters, have developed an integrated Initial Rapid Assessment (IRA) Tool intended to provide a quick snapshot of the situation in the first 7 days (preferably in the first 72 hours) after acute emergency onset.  It is not intended to provide detailed quantitative information and should be used to help understand the situation and guide initial response.  The tool is designed to collect data at the community and facility (not at the household) level. The assessment using the IRA tool at one site should take approximately 3-4 hours.

The tool is derivative of many existing tools used by governments, NGOs, donors and the UN, has been extensively peer reviewed and includes data entry and analysis software and annexes to help guide data collection and analysis. Both field level and country level guidance have been developed which includes pre-crisis secondary data collection checklists in the annex. The initial draft of the tool has been field tested in 6 countries in collaboration with the UN Country Team in each location (Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Colombia, Chad, DRC and CAR).  Based on the field-testing report and consultations with partners, a final version is now available. The accompanying IRA Guidance Note should be consulted when intending to use the IRA tool. In addition, as an improvement to the earlier version, the latest version contains a strategy of analyses and an excel data sheet that provides automatic results for reporting.  Further when data is entered an automatic report will appear, amonst others, in bar charts.

The IRA toolkit can be downloaded  here for Data Entry Tool and Field Assessment Form.  The IRA is a living document and we are keen to know of its application and any recommendations for improvements, therefore we would request that when you do use it, you complete a very short feedback questionnaire also available here.

If you have any questions on the IRA please contact globalnutritioncluster@unicef.org, for more information
